Getting Accustomed to Your Dentures

Posted .

When you are missing teeth, not only do you feel self-conscious about your appearance, but you run the risk of doing further damage to your mouth. When you have empty spaces in your smile, your other teeth have room to drift out of their proper alignment. They could then strike each other at improper angles, wearing down your tooth enamel. Missing teeth also create another space for plaque to build up and bacteria to breed, which can cause gum disease and further tooth loss.

Dentures are an inexpensive, easy, and relatively quick solution to the problem of missing teeth. They can restore your smile in short order and allow you to speak clearly and chew your food well. But it will take some time to get used to them.

At first, they may feel bulky and uncomfortable. That is normal and eventually you will get used to wearing them. However, if you feel continued pain and pressure, you should contact the dentist to have your dentures adjusted. In some cases, the dentist may have you come back in to have your dentures lined, which should add a level of comfort.

You may experience some difficulty eating when you start wearing your dentures. It will help if you cut your food into smaller pieces to make it more manageable, or into long strips that you can chew on both sides of your mouth. You might discover that there are some words that are difficult to pronounce and you can practice saying those words, or try saying them slower.

Be patient as you adjust to life with dentures. It can take some time, especially if you have been living without some of your teeth for a while.
